An Introduction to MHHS webinar: Key takeaways & related resources

Watch the recording, download the slides, and get a recap of the key takeaways from our 'Introduction to MHHS' webinar with energy data specialist Stark's Jurjen de Greeve that took place on 14th August 2024.

The MHHS programme was announced by Ofgem in 2021 and has a (revised) rollout start date of April 2025, with full implementation due by October 2026. Yet the amount of uncertainty and misinformation circulating suggests that it is currently not well understood by many within the energy industry, and customers are sometimes being given inaccurate information and advice.

So, to clear up the confusion, we partnered with our friends at energy data & metering specialists, Stark, to guide brokers through the half-hourly settlement programme and dispel some of the myths and false assumptions that are currently doing the rounds.

“More data, faster. That’s what you can expect from MHHS. To make the energy cost saving and Net Zero benefits MHHS is looking to bring, you need to secure continuity of independent quality assured data. With the upheaval of moving across to new systems, terminology and the need to roll out the right metering, its essential to start working with your clients to be prepared and get ahead of the competition now.”

Key takeaways [+ timestamps]

  • [03:06] Common misconceptions about MHHS include it being optional or not affecting certain customers; it will affect all electricity meters in the UK
  • [04:14] MHHS aims for substantial savings, predicted to reach £4.5 billion for consumers, and is essential for achieving Net Zero by 2050
  • [06:00] The migration to MHHS will start in April 2025 and be completed by October 2026, affecting approximately 30 million meters
  • [08:06] The shift involves a transition from a 14-month settlement period to a required 5 to 7-day turnaround for accurate data
  • [18:39] Jurjen discusses the importance of having AMR or half-hourly meters increases, enabling consumers to benefit from more flexible pricing options and enhanced data accuracy
  • [22.43] Customers are encouraged to proactively implement half-hourly or AMR metering now to retain data quality and stay ahead in the transitioning market
  • [25:44] Market-wide half hourly settlement will impact future electricity contracts, with profile classes being phased out but codes of practice remaining intact
  • [27:07] Customers won’t need a working smart meter immediately for the MHHS rollout; existing meters will not all need to be replaced at once
  • [29:10] Compatibility of new smart meters among suppliers is not guaranteed, and customers should discuss specifics with their supplier
  • [30:36] Areas with poor reception may face challenges with smart meter transmission; options include high gain aerials or satellite connections
  • [32:41] MHHS implementation costs are mandatory, and while there may be initial cost increases for customers, long-term savings are projected
  • [34:03] Ongoing Meter Operator agreements will change significantly, necessitating reaccreditation and potential changes in service levels
  • [35:19] Every meter currently has a Meter Operator Partner (MOP) due to safety regulations, with regular checks occurring annually
  • [36:23] Standing charges for half hourly meters may be influenced by the new MHHS regulations, but specifics should be discussed with suppliers
  • [38:40] All meters will transition to being half hourly; the concept of non-half hourly meters will eventually be obsolete post-MHHS migration
